Built in Tonga.
Carried through generations.

In the heart of Nukuʻalofa, Alfred Cowley established the family’s first business—a bakery and general store serving the local community. His enterprise laid the foundation for what would become A. Cowley & Sons, beginning a family legacy that has now continued through five generations.
In September 1917, Princess Sālote—who would become Queen of Tonga the following year—married Viliami Tungī Mailefihi in Nukuʻalofa. Their elaborate wedding cake was commissioned from Buchanan’s in Auckland. Standing eight feet tall and costing £65, it was decorated with Tonga’s coat of arms, the national motto and the couple’s initials.
The cake, however, did not survive the voyage to Tonga undamaged. By then, Alfred Cowley had been baking in Nukuʻalofa for 24 years, and he was called upon to restore it. After carefully rebuilding the cake, he photographed his work—with his own trade card proudly displayed at its base.

By the 1930s, Francis Cowley and his son Frank were travelling regularly between Tonga and New Zealand, building new relationships and establishing supply connections. Their efforts marked the beginning of the family’s importing business, bringing products and fresh produce from New Zealand to sell in Tonga.

In the 1980s, Frank’s son Alfred returned to the family business and began transforming its baking operations. Building upon the foundations established before him, Alfred introduced a new period of growth and modernisation that would shape the future of the Cowley bakery.

In 2015, A. Cowley & Sons invested in a fully automated baking line from Australia. Following its shipment, installation and commissioning, the new plant became operational in 2018—the first and only facility of its kind in Tonga.
At the heart of the plant is a 30-metre tunnel oven, delivering greater consistency in product quality while allowing the bakery to expand and diversify its range. The investment has supported the continued growth of A. Cowley Bakery and provides the capacity to meet increasing demand well into the future.

Today, A. Cowley & Sons is one of Tonga’s most established family-owned businesses, with operations spanning Baked goods, Food and Beverage manufacturing, Meat processing, Poultry farming, Wholesale and Distribution, Retail, Shipping and Logistics, and property. Now in its fifth generation, ACS continues to grow and evolve while remaining guided by the values on which it was founded—family, service and an enduring commitment to Tonga.
